Uncertainty Clouds India’s Currency Strategy as Rupee Hits Near-Record Lows

Tue, Jul 21, 2026(45d ago)Business

The Indian rupee is once again approaching record lows, leaving investors and market participants perplexed by the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) seemingly passive approach. Despite a promising recovery in June fueled by foreign capital inflows, the currency has become the weakest performer in Asia this month. The lack of consistent intervention from the central bank has sparked intense debate among traders, who are struggling to decipher if this silence represents a strategic shift or a lack of consensus within the RBI’s leadership regarding how much depreciation the economy can withstand.

Internal divisions appear to be at the heart of this ambiguity. Sources suggest that the current RBI leadership favors a market-driven approach, intervening only to prevent extreme volatility, while more traditionalist officials argue for aggressive measures to stabilize the rupee and discourage speculative bets. This mixed messaging has overshadowed recent efforts to bolster dollar reserves, causing hedge funds and institutional investors to rebuild bearish positions against the rupee. As the central bank maintains its vague stance on what constitutes "excessive volatility," the market remains on edge, uncertain of where the RBI’s true line in the sand lies.
