UAE E-commerce Shows Resilience with Strategic Spending Shifts

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(45d ago)Business

While the broader Gulf region has experienced a downturn in online retail, the UAE’s e-commerce sector has demonstrated notable resilience throughout the first half of 2026. Data from industry researchers indicates a clear evolution in local shopping habits: although the total number of individual orders has dipped, the average value per transaction has climbed significantly, rising from $97 to $111. This shift highlights a transition toward more intentional, high-value consumption, with residents increasingly utilizing digital platforms for essential household and lifestyle needs rather than impulsive, low-cost shopping.

Mobile technology has served as the primary engine for this growth, with smartphone-based orders jumping over 20% to account for more than half of all regional transactions. Consumers are now leveraging digital tools, such as promo codes and social media recommendations, to plan their purchases more strategically. As Admitad CEO Anna Gidirim notes, shoppers aren't retreating from the digital marketplace; instead, they are becoming more deliberate, prioritizing larger investments in categories like home goods, electronics, and fashion while leaning into the convenience of a modern, cashless digital ecosystem.
