The Evolution of Samsung’s Foldable Revolution

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(3h ago)Business

When Samsung first unveiled the Galaxy Fold in 2019, the device felt like a daring, albeit unrefined, prototype rather than a polished consumer product. It was notoriously thick at 17.1mm, heavy, and hampered by a cramped 4.6-inch external display that made basic tasks difficult. The launch was further plagued by hardware reliability issues, turning the experimental device into a high-priced gamble for early adopters. It was a bulky piece of hardware that demanded significant compromises from its users, serving more as a statement of intent than a practical daily driver.

Fast forward to the modern era, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 stands as a testament to just how far the technology has matured. The newer model is significantly thinner at 8.9mm and noticeably lighter, yet it manages to house a vastly superior 8-inch internal screen and a much more functional 6.5-inch cover display. With massive upgrades like a 200MP camera sensor and the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the Fold 7 has transitioned from a fragile experiment into a powerhouse device. By maintaining a similar price point to the original, Samsung has successfully transformed a once-clunky concept into a refined, high-performance tool that no longer feels like a compromise.
