DP World Secures €25 Million Green Loan for Constanța Terminal Electrification

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(45d ago)Business

DP World has partnered with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to secure a €25 million green loan, marking a major milestone in the electrification of the Constanța South Container Terminal. This financing is a central component of a larger €100 million initiative aimed at slashing the terminal's carbon footprint by over 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. By swapping outdated diesel machinery for modern electric alternatives and implementing shore-power systems for docked vessels, the project is set to significantly enhance air quality and operational efficiency, underscoring DP World’s commitment to sustainable logistics in Romania.

The ambitious project is supported by a mix of international and national funding, including a €19.7 million grant from the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility and €7.5 million from Romania’s 2021–2027 Transport Programme. The investment focuses on two primary areas: building essential electrical infrastructure—such as grid upgrades, transformer facilities, and new charging stations—and upgrading the terminal’s hardware to include remote-operated rubber-tyred gantry cranes and electric tractors. Svitlana Balaban, CEO of DP World Constanța, emphasized that this transition is vital for maintaining the terminal's competitive edge, positioning it as the premier green gateway for trade between the Black Sea region and Central Europe.
