UAE Firms Mandated to Shift to Direct SMS Model by Year-End

Thu, Jul 23, 2026(1d ago)Business

The UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has issued an urgent directive requiring all government bodies and private businesses to transition their Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging systems to the "Direct Model" by December 31, 2026. This regulatory shift aims to streamline communication by routing messages straight from authorized SMS aggregators to the recipient, effectively cutting out unnecessary intermediaries. The mandate is critical for any entity utilizing automated texts for essential functions, including One-Time Passwords (OTPs), order status updates, marketing alerts, and general customer notifications.

To avoid service disruptions, organizations across all sectors—ranging from banking and e-commerce to healthcare and logistics—must proactively coordinate with their licensed telecom providers, such as du or e&. Businesses are urged to audit their existing third-party contracts and update their service submission workflows to align with the new direct-to-bill framework. By completing this transition before the deadline, companies will ensure their SMS communications remain compliant with national standards and continue to reach their customers without technical interference.
