Major tech companies are racing to construct massive data centers to support the AI revolution, but they are increasingly bypassing the public electrical grid to meet their staggering power needs. While companies like Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft explore these unconventional power sources, legal battles are already heating up, such as the NAACP’s lawsuit against xAI regarding its operations in Memphis. As states like Texas become hubs for this decentralized power trend, experts worry that the combination of lax oversight and the relentless demand for AI compute capacity will force a significant setback in the transition toward clean, sustainable energy.
