UK and GCC Forge Historic Free Trade Agreement to Boost Economic Ties

Wed, May 20, 2026(92d ago)Business

The United Kingdom and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have officially finalized a landmark free trade agreement, marking the first time a G7 nation has secured such a deal with the Gulf bloc. This comprehensive partnership is set to eliminate tariffs on a wide range of goods, including agricultural staples like chocolate, cheese, and cereals, while also establishing innovative frameworks for the seamless flow of digital data. By removing an estimated ÂŁ580 million in annual duties, the agreement aims to significantly lower costs for British exporters and enhance market access across the Gulf region.

Government officials and industry leaders have lauded the deal as a major catalyst for long-term prosperity. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the agreement will bolster British businesses and support workers through increased wages and expanded opportunities, with projections suggesting it could add billions to the UK economy annually. Beyond trade in goods, the deal provides a significant boost to the professional services sector—which makes up the bulk of UK exports to the region—by simplifying visa processes and creating more favorable conditions for consultants, engineers, and legal professionals to operate throughout the Middle East.
