The Evolution of UAE Remittances: From Paper Ledgers to Instant Transfers

Tue, Aug 18, 2026(6h ago)Business

For expatriates living in the UAE during the 1960s, sending money back home was a tedious process that often took three days to complete, relying on paper ledgers and manual processing. Today, that experience has been transformed into an almost instantaneous service. Rashed A. Al Ansari, Group CEO of Al Ansari Financial Services, notes that modern technology allows funds to reach a beneficiary’s account in mere seconds. This digital shift has been profound; while digital transactions accounted for only 1% of the company's business in 2018, they have surged to 30% today, with projections to hit 60% within the next five years.

Despite the rise of apps, the company maintains a physical footprint of nearly 300 branches to support a diverse customer base, including laborers who prefer face-to-face service. As the firm celebrates its 60th anniversary, its focus has shifted toward balancing rapid speed with rigorous regulatory compliance. To overcome the bottleneck of manual security checks, the company is integrating AI to manage suspicious account reviews, ensuring they maintain a perfect track record of regulatory adherence. By focusing on trust and adapting to the needs of the UAE's vast expat population, Al Ansari has grown from a single branch in the 1960s into a regional financial leader that continues to prioritize customer accessibility and integrity.
