What Employees Actually Want: Why Health and Flexibility Outrank Office Perks

Thu, Aug 27, 2026(45d ago)Business

A recent study by NAVO highlights a significant shift in what employees in the UAE and the broader Gulf region prioritize in the workplace. While many companies lean on flashy perks like free office meals or lifestyle facilities to attract talent, the data suggests these features are far down the list of what workers actually care about. Instead, the analysis—which examined over 2,000 employer sources and 1,000 employee discussions—reveals that health insurance, general wellbeing initiatives, and flexible working arrangements are the true drivers of employee satisfaction.

Interestingly, the study points to a growing disconnect between what employers advertise and what staff prioritize. While companies often push professional development and life insurance, employees are much more vocal about their daily physical comfort, with the vast majority of mentions regarding ergonomic workstations and standing desks coming directly from the workforce rather than HR departments. Ultimately, while free snacks remain a common recruiting tactic, they ranked last in the study, suggesting that modern workers now view essentials like comprehensive medical cover, flexible hours, and a healthy work-life balance as fundamental requirements rather than optional bonuses.
