ChatGPT and Major Platforms Face Stricter EU Oversight

Tue, Sep 1, 2026(2h ago)Business

The European Union has officially ramped up its regulatory reach by adding ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox to its list of "very large" online platforms. Because these services each command more than 45 million monthly active users within the bloc, they are now subject to the rigorous requirements of the Digital Services Act (DSA). This move marks a significant milestone, as ChatGPT is the first AI chatbot to be brought under this level of legal scrutiny, with officials classifying it as a search engine to fit the framework.

These companies now have a four-month window to ensure their systems comply with the EU’s mandate to mitigate systemic risks. This includes taking proactive steps to protect minors, safeguard public security, and manage the spread of illegal content or algorithmic harms. By enforcing these rules, Brussels aims to hold these massive digital players accountable for their impact on society. Experts believe this decision sets a major precedent, likely shaping how future generative AI systems will be regulated across Europe as the EU continues its aggressive campaign to police Big Tech.
