Wall Street Giants Unite to Launch US Dollar Stablecoin by 2027
A major coalition of 21 global financial institutions, including heavyweights like Goldman Sachs, Citi, Bank of America, and Deutsche Bank, has unveiled plans to establish a new company dedicated to issuing a dollar-pegged cryptocurrency by early 2027. This initiative, which has more than doubled in size since its initial announcement in 2025, marks a significant shift toward integrating blockchain technology into traditional finance. Beyond the dollar-backed token, the consortium intends to eventually issue stablecoins linked to other major G7 currencies, with the euro currently prioritized as their next major goal.
Despite this ambitious move, the path ahead remains uncertain. The nascent project will face stiff competition from other groups, such as the 37-member Qivalis consortium, as well as political pressure and skepticism regarding mainstream demand for bank-issued tokens. Current market leaders like Tether continue to dominate the landscape with billions in circulation, while early experiments from lenders like Societe Generale have yet to gain significant traction. Furthermore, central banking authorities, including the European Central Bank, have raised alarms about the potential threat these private assets could pose to broader financial stability and existing monetary policy.
