Standard Chartered Becomes First Global Systemically Important Bank to Launch Spot Crypto Trading in the UAE
Standard Chartered has officially become the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to introduce spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether to institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates. Operating under the regulation of the Dubai Financial Services Authority, the bank is leveraging its DIFC entity to provide these services directly through its established electronic trading channels. This integration allows institutional investors to manage digital assets using the same familiar interfaces they currently use for traditional foreign exchange markets, while offering the flexibility to settle trades via the bankâs own custody service or a third-party provider of their choosing.
Rola Abu Manneh, the bankâs CEO for the UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan, credited the region's progressive regulatory environment for enabling this milestone. By merging secure, institutional-grade custody with global banking governance, Standard Chartered is aiming to simplify how large-scale clients enter the digital asset space. This move follows the successful launch of similar services in the UK earlier this year and serves as a key extension of the bankâs broader strategy, which includes comprehensive digital asset support, tokenization initiatives, and global trading ventures.
