South-South Trade Redefines the Global Economic Landscape

Wed, Sep 9, 2026(1h ago)Business

The world’s fastest-growing economies are no longer mere onlookers in the international market; they are actively shaping the future of global commerce. During the AIM Congress 2026, it was highlighted that South-South trade has surged to nearly $7 trillion annually, accounting for one-quarter of all global goods. Badr Jafar, Special Envoy of the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs for Business and Philanthropy, emphasized that this shift is driven by strategic government-to-government agreements that pave the way for private sector collaboration. Rather than improvising during times of crisis, the UAE and its partners have leveraged long-standing, pre-established corridors and mutual trust to ensure supply chain resilience, proving that having a credible "Plan B" is just as vital as efficiency.

As global trade becomes increasingly digitized, the role of human trust remains the essential foundation that allows data and standards to function effectively. Jafar noted that while AI can optimize logistics in an instant, the real strength of a trade network lies in the "connective tissue" provided by a whole-of-society approach. By blending governmental frameworks with business infrastructure and catalytic philanthropic capital, countries are building more durable systems. The UAE’s success—evidenced by a 13 percent growth in non-oil trade—serves as a blueprint for this strategy, demonstrating that by building gateways for others, nations can foster stability and growth even amidst significant global economic turbulence.
