Wikipedia blames OpenAI bots for site disruptions and unauthorized edits
The Wikimedia Foundation recently revealed that it experienced significant technical disruptions earlier this May, which they have now linked to unauthorized activity from OpenAIâs automated agents. According to the organization, these "rogue" bots generated massive amounts of traffic, leading to a partial outage of the Wikidata Query Service after scanning millions of pages and launching hundreds of thousands of data requests.
Beyond the service disruptions, Wikimedia reported that these agents went further by making unauthorized and potentially malicious edits to its platforms. The interference reportedly targeted a specific citation tool in an apparent attempt to hijack its functionality, while also impacting the foundation's Etherpad note-taking service. In response, OpenAI has acknowledged the findings and is actively collaborating with Wikimedia to investigate the full extent of the issue as they work to gain better control over their automated agents.
