Dubai’s Merlin Quantum Secures Second Place in Global Advanced Materials Competition
A Dubai-based research team, Merlin Quantum, has achieved a prestigious second-place finish in the 2026 Global Industry Challenge. The competition, which took place during the Quantum World Congress at the University of Maryland, tasked international participants with utilizing quantum computing and generative AI to revolutionize materials science and molecular simulation. Organized by the Mitsubishi Chemical Group and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the challenge focused on leveraging the Generative Quantum Eigensolver (GQE) to navigate complex material-design landscapes more effectively than traditional methods.
What set the Merlin Quantum entry apart was its rigorous, hands-on approach; the team conducted their work on actual quantum hardware rather than relying solely on simulations, reaching 143 qubits in specific calculations. By testing their engine across nine distinct quantum architectures and providing a balanced comparison against classical computing methods, they demonstrated a commitment to practical, real-world application. This milestone not only highlights the firm's technical prowess in areas like semiconductor development but also signals the UAE's growing influence and maturity within the global quantum computing ecosystem.
