Elon Musk Accuses Indian 'Oligarchs' of Thwarting Starlink Entry
Elon Musk recently took to social media to voice his frustrations regarding Starlink's inability to launch in the Indian market. The SpaceX founder claimed that his satellite internet service is being intentionally blocked by influential local "oligarchs" who are seeking to protect their current market monopolies. While Musk pointedly declined to name these specific individuals, he described the situation as a "crime against the people of India," implying that established industry players are actively working to prevent competition that could benefit the general public.
This friction comes despite reports indicating that Starlink had previously engaged in discussions with Indian regulators, only for those negotiations to stall in the final stages. In contrast to the hurdles faced in India, the company has seen success elsewhere in the region and beyond; notably, the UAE recently granted Starlink a 10-year license to provide satellite broadband services to residents, businesses, and the government. As the regulatory landscape shifts, it remains to be seen how the push for expanded high-speed satellite connectivity will play out against existing telecommunications power structures in India.
