Gen Z in the UAE: Prioritising Shared Experiences Over Material Goods
A fresh study by Platinumlist and Udora reveals a significant shift in the spending habits of Gen Z in the UAE, showing that young adults are increasingly valuing social connection over personal shopping. Rather than focusing on material goods, nearly 70 per cent of those surveyed prioritize spending on experiences that build and maintain relationships. Even as economic pressures rise, this demographic remains committed to social activities, often choosing to trim their budgets for personal purchases before cutting back on outings, concerts, or gift-giving.
Contrary to the belief that digital life encourages isolation, the data indicates that technology acts as a bridge to face-to-face engagement. Over 90 per cent of young people report that their digital interactions actually motivate them to seek more real-world connections, with a large majority feeling the need to unplug from their devices to fully enjoy time with friends and family. This "experience-first" mindset has turned social spending into a recurring monthly staple, with many residents dedicating significant portions of their income to dining out and events, effectively reshaping the landscape for retail and entertainment businesses across the region.
