Dollar Strengthens to Seven-Week High Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Thu, Sep 3, 2026(2h ago)Finance

The U.S. dollar climbed to a seven-week peak this Wednesday, fueled by investors seeking a safe haven amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and shifting expectations regarding global interest rates. As conflict between the U.S. and Iran intensifies, the greenback has naturally attracted demand, largely because the U.S. economy remains better insulated against energy price shocks compared to other major economies like the Eurozone or Japan. Market analysts suggest that the diverging monetary policies between the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank will continue to favor the dollar, with the ECB nearing the end of its hiking cycle while the Fed faces potential pressure to maintain or increase rates.

Simultaneously, the Japanese yen has remained under intense scrutiny, hovering near the critical 160-per-dollar threshold as markets look for signs of further intervention from the Bank of Japan. Despite government discussions and concerns over the yen’s weakness, the currency has struggled to sustain any significant momentum. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, the dollar faced a sharp decline despite a rate hike, as investors interpreted the central bank's stance as less aggressive than previously hoped. With U.S. Treasury yields reaching their highest levels since late 2023, the dollar index continues to show resilience, reflecting the complex interplay between inflation fears, fiscal uncertainty, and global geopolitical volatility.
