Gold Prices Tumble as Inflation Data Triggers Rate Hike Expectations
Gold prices took a significant hit on Wednesday, sliding over 1% to reach their lowest point since early October. This marks the third consecutive day of losses for the precious metal, driven primarily by a hotter-than-anticipated inflation report. With the Consumer Price Index rising by 0.6%, market confidence has shifted, leading investors to believe that the Federal Reserve will likely push forward with further interest rate hikes. As a result, the dollar has strengthened and Treasury yields have climbed, creating a difficult environment for non-yielding assets like gold.
Current market projections from the CME’s FedWatch Tool indicate that the probability of a rate hike this month has nearly doubled, jumping to 42%. While gold is historically considered a hedge against inflation, the rising cost of borrowing is currently outweighing that benefit, dragging silver, platinum, and palladium down alongside it. Despite the immediate bearish trend, some analysts suggest that gold could regain its luster in the longer term, supported by robust central bank purchasing and ongoing concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of US national debt.
