Meta Restructures Workforce to Accelerate AI Ambitions

Tue, May 19, 2026(49d ago)Technology

Meta has officially outlined its latest round of layoffs and organizational shifts, marking a significant push toward an AI-centric operational model. In an internal memo, Chief People Officer Janelle Gale confirmed that the company is flattening its management hierarchy to create leaner, more agile teams. As part of this transition, approximately 7,000 employees are being reassigned to specialized departments like Applied AI Engineering and the Agent Transformation Accelerator. These initiatives are designed to prioritize the development of autonomous AI agents, both to improve internal productivity and to integrate advanced AI capabilities into Meta's core product offerings.

The restructuring, which affects nearly 20% of the company's total headcount when including previous job cuts and hiring freezes, has sparked considerable backlash among the staff. Employees have voiced their frustrations through internal channels and petitions, particularly regarding controversial initiatives like mouse-tracking software used to train AI models. Many workers have expressed concerns over privacy and the perceived lack of transparency from leadership during the lengthy period of uncertainty preceding these announcements. As Meta shifts its focus toward a flatter, tech-heavy structure, it faces the growing challenge of maintaining morale while navigating a widespread cultural and operational transformation.
