In a training facility in southern China, hundreds of humanoid robots perform mundane tasks—sorting crates and brewing coffee—under the watchful eyes of human trainers. Despite the high-tech appearance, these machines remain slow and remarkably clumsy, often requiring hundreds of attempts to successfully execute a single basic movement. This training center, supported by government tenders, represents the heart of China’s massive push into "embodied AI." While the goal is to create robots capable of navigating the physical world to address the nation’s shrinking workforce and aging population, the current reality is far less impressive. Industry experts increasingly argue that what is being showcased as revolutionary technology is often little more than choreographed "dancing" disguised as productivity.
The Chinese government is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into this sector, mirroring the state-led strategies that previously propelled its electric vehicle and solar energy industries. However, analysts warn that humanoid robotics is an early-stage technology far from maturity. While the hardware is world-class, the "brains" of these machines lack the intuition required for general-purpose labor. Because the industry is currently fueled by state subsidies and government procurement rather than genuine commercial demand, many observers fear a massive market bubble.
