Tim Cook Steps Down: John Ternus Named New Apple CEO

Mon, Aug 31, 2026(3h ago)Technology

Today marks the conclusion of an era at Apple as Tim Cook officially steps down after a transformative 15-year tenure as CEO. Having taken the reins from Steve Jobs in 2011, Cook oversaw a period of immense growth, ushering in iconic products like the Apple Watch, AirPods, and the Vision Pro, while significantly diversifying the company’s services sector. While he is leaving the top executive role, he won't be straying far; starting tomorrow, he will transition into a new capacity as the company’s executive chairman, where he will focus on global policy and board-level strategy.

The baton is set to be passed to John Ternus, the current senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, who will officially assume the CEO position on September 1. A long-time veteran of the company who joined in 2001, Ternus has played a pivotal role in the development of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineups. This leadership shift, which follows a meticulous succession plan vetted by the board, signals a fresh chapter for the tech giant as it prepares to balance its historical legacy with future innovation under new guidance.
