Instagram Mandates New Labels for AI-Generated Profiles
Instagram is taking steps to increase transparency regarding synthetic identities by rebranding its “AI creator” tag to “AI-generated profile.” This update is specifically designed for accounts where the primary persona is a virtual influencer or a digital construct rather than a real human. The platform moved to implement this change after user feedback indicated growing discomfort with being misled by hyper-realistic AI personalities that mimic human behavior. By clearly labeling these accounts, Instagram aims to ensure that followers are fully aware of who—or what—is behind the content they consume.
It is important to note that this requirement does not apply to every creator using AI tools, such as those employing generative software for photo editing, caption writing, or background enhancements. The mandate is strictly for profiles that represent an entirely synthetic person as the account’s face. Creators who fail to disclose their AI nature may face consequences, including restricted reach and removal from discovery features like the Explore page. While Meta is not banning these personas, they are enforcing a policy of honesty; users who proactively label their accounts will avoid penalties, ensuring that the lines between human creators and automated AI influencers remain distinct.
