Apple’s First Foldable iPhone: Potential Trade-offs for a Premium Design

Tue, Sep 8, 2026(59m ago)Technology

As anticipation builds for Apple’s rumored entry into the foldable smartphone market, leaks suggest that the device—often dubbed the "iPhone Ultra"—will prioritize an ultra-slim design over some staple flagship features. Expected to retail for upwards of $2,000, the phone is rumored to feature a book-like design that unfolds into a tablet-sized screen. To maintain a remarkably thin profile of around 4.5mm, reports indicate Apple may swap its signature Face ID system for a side-mounted Touch ID sensor, similar to certain iPad models. Additionally, the device may lack a dedicated telephoto lens, potentially limiting optical zoom capabilities to prioritize internal space for the battery and complex hinge mechanism.

While these compromises are significant, they reflect the engineering challenges of creating a durable, pocket-sized device that functions like a mini iPad. By opting for a high-quality main and ultra-wide camera pairing and a reinforced, discreet hinge, Apple appears to be focusing on the foldable experience rather than packing every high-end sensor found in the Pro Max series. Whether users will accept the shift back to fingerprint authentication and a downgraded camera setup at such a steep price remains the big question, but for now, enthusiasts must wait for official confirmation to see if Apple’s ambitious vision balances innovation with everyday utility.
