Heroic UAE Nurse Saves Collapsed Passenger Mid-Flight
When an Air India Express flight from Dubai to Tiruchirappalli was interrupted by a medical emergency just 20 minutes after takeoff, Akilaoviyan Neelakandan, a nurse from RAK Hospital, stepped up to save the day. Despite this being only the second time she had ever flown, Neelakandan remained calm when a 32-year-old passenger suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive. While other passengers panicked, she sprang into action, moving the man to a more spacious area of the plane with the help of another doctor to begin stabilizing him.
Working with limited onboard equipment, Neelakandan monitored the man’s vital signs, noting his low pulse and high blood pressure, while managing his seizure-like symptoms. She skillfully administered an IV line and electrolyte support, and kept the patient warm with blankets until he regained consciousness. Her quick thinking and composure during the two-hour ordeal were later honored by the flight crew, who presented her with a handwritten note of gratitude as the passenger was safely transferred to medical teams upon landing in India.
