Abu Dhabi Unveils New Regulatory Framework for Autonomous Marine Vessel Testing
Abu Dhabi has officially introduced a comprehensive regulatory framework designed to govern the testing of autonomous and remotely operated small marine vessels within the emirate. Developed by the Department of Municipalities and Transport in collaboration with the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), the initiative seeks to foster maritime innovation while prioritizing safety. By establishing clear standards, the framework ensures that these advanced technologies can be tested without posing risks to human life, property, or the delicate marine ecosystem.
The new manual, titled "Requirements and Controls for Testing Autonomous Marine Crafts," establishes a mandatory permitting system to monitor all ongoing testing activities. This protocol outlines strict obligations for both applicants and operators, requiring them to adhere to specific safety procedures that prevent any disruption to standard maritime operations. Furthermore, the guidelines mandate that all testing programs must include comprehensive insurance coverage and robust cybersecurity measures, ensuring that these cutting-edge trials remain both secure and systematic.
