Dubai’s Nol System Set for Major Digital Upgrade
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is currently mid-way through a massive overhaul of its Nol payment system, with 72 percent of the project already completed. By the first quarter of 2027, the transport network aims to function much like a bank card system, offering commuters a fully cashless and highly integrated experience. This digital transformation is designed to unify payment methods across the emirate’s metro, buses, marine transport, and taxis, aligning with the city’s broader goal of becoming a premier smart city.
The upgraded system will be rolled out in three distinct phases, introducing modern features such as QR code ticketing, next-generation Nol cards, and full compatibility with digital wallets and standard bank cards. Passengers will benefit from more control over their travel finances, as the new platform allows for personalized accounts where users can link multiple cards, track transaction histories, set up automatic top-ups, and even block lost cards to recover balances. By modernizing these payment touchpoints, the RTA is moving beyond simple transport fares, positioning the Nol card as a comprehensive, versatile tool for daily life in Dubai.
