Dubai Metro Blue Line Completes First Tunneling Milestone in Record Time
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has officially marked a significant engineering milestone, completing the first phase of tunneling for the upcoming Blue Line expansion in record time. Utilizing a state-of-the-art tunnel boring machine (TBM) known as "Al Wugeisha," the project has demonstrated a massive leap in efficiency compared to the RTA’s initial ventures in 2007. While early tunneling efforts once averaged 12 meters daily over seven months, this modern, digitally-guided powerhouse is achieving speeds of up to 30 meters per day, wrapping up the initial phase in just two months.
This achievement highlights the rapid evolution of Dubai’s infrastructure capabilities, with the 163-meter-long, 2,000-tonne TBM operating around the clock to support the city's ambitious growth. The Dh18-billion Blue Line, which will span 30km and feature 14 stations, is currently on track for a grand opening on September 9, 2029—the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro. With a design split between underground tunnels and elevated tracks, the project signals a new chapter in the emirate’s commitment to world-class public transport and smart urban development.
