The Legacy of Dubai’s Original Tailor: Honoring Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Shafei Al Madani

Thu, Jul 9, 2026(9h ago)UAE

Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Shafei Al Madani, widely recognized as Dubai’s first tailor, recently passed away at the age of 97, marking the end of an era that spanned eight decades. Beginning his journey as a teenager in 1947, he opened his shop, National Tailors, near the Deira Creek at a time when Dubai was a humble settlement with fewer than 60,000 residents. From sewing specialized diving suits for pearl divers to crafting thousands of traditional kanduras, his life mirrored the rapid transformation of the city itself. Even as he built a sprawling business empire that eventually spanned dozens of locations across the UAE, he remained deeply committed to his craft, continuing to visit his shop well into his nineties.

Beyond his professional achievements, Al Madani is remembered as a man of great humility, kindness, and perseverance. High-profile figures, including Dr. Anwar Gargash, have paid tribute to him as a pillar of old Deira, while his grandson, filmmaker Abdulrahman Al Madani, reflects on a grandfather who balanced hard work with generosity and a keen sense of humor. For his family, the tailor's life serves as an enduring blueprint for success, demonstrating how passion and dedication can bridge the gap from a small, kerosene-lit workspace to national prominence. His journey remains a poignant chapter in Dubai’s history, inspiring future generations to pursue their ambitions with the same quiet dignity he carried throughout his remarkable life.
