Why Many UAE Residents Are Choosing Staycations This Summer
A recent survey conducted by Majid Al Futtaim’s 'The Happiness Lab' reveals that nearly half of UAE residents have decided to skip international travel this year, opting instead to enjoy a summer at home. The study, which polled 900 residents, points to a combination of rising global travel costs, lengthy visa processing times, and regional instability as the primary drivers behind this trend. Rather than braving expensive airfares or crowded airports, many families are finding that the UAE’s own leisure sector, which offers a variety of climate-controlled indoor attractions and high-quality entertainment, provides a more convenient and cost-effective alternative.
For those staying put, shopping malls have emerged as the go-to destination for beating the heat. Data shows that 72 percent of residents prefer these venues, as they have evolved into comprehensive hubs for dining, social outings, and family entertainment. While demand for long-haul destinations like Japan, the Maldives, and Australia remains, the prevailing sentiment among residents is a focus on shared family experiences. Whether it’s enjoying a weekend staycation or exploring local indoor attractions, residents are increasingly prioritizing flexibility and comfort, proving that a memorable holiday can often be found right in their own backyard.
