UAE citizens can now renew Emirates ID cards up to one year before expiry

Fri, Jul 17, 2026(1h ago)UAE

Starting July 14, 2026, UAE nationals have been granted the convenience of renewing their Emirates ID cards up to a full year before the expiration date. This update, introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), effectively doubles the previous six-month renewal window. The policy change is designed to sync perfectly with the existing passport renewal timeline, allowing citizens to consolidate both tasks into a single, streamlined transaction if their documents expire around the same time.

This initiative is part of a broader push to modernize government services and embrace the Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme. By moving toward proactive, digital-first solutions, the ICP aims to minimize red tape and provide residents with more flexibility in managing their personal affairs. Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, highlighted that this shift not only improves the overall customer experience but also cements the UAE's reputation as a global leader in secure, efficient, and highly integrated identity management systems.
