Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi Honoured with Italy's Highest Merit
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Education and Book Culture, has been awarded the prestigious officer rank of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. The official ceremony was held at Sharjah’s Al Bait Al Westi on July 13, where the Italian Ambassador to the UAE, Lorenzo Fanara, presented the honour on behalf of the Italian President. This distinction serves as a tribute to Sheikha Bodour’s decades of dedicated service in fostering cultural and educational cooperation between the UAE and Italy, as well as her global influence in the publishing industry.
Reflecting on the achievement, Sheikha Bodour expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing her belief that literature acts as a vital bridge for international peace and mutual understanding. Her extensive career includes leadership roles as President of the American University of Sharjah and the International Publishers Association, alongside her work with the Kalimat Group. Ambassador Fanara lauded her commitment to these initiatives, noting that such cultural investments are essential for the enduring partnership between the two nations. This recognition highlights her impactful advocacy for freedom of speech, inclusivity in publishing, and her humanitarian efforts in expanding global access to books for underserved communities.
