Early Autism Intervention in Abu Dhabi: A New Model of Care

Tue, Jul 21, 2026(6h ago)UAE

A new neurodevelopmental centre in Abu Dhabi, Sakina for Children, is transforming the way young patients receive autism support by prioritizing immediate action. Under the Department of Health’s Autism Hub pathway, children are now seen by specialists within two weeks, with diagnostic assessments finalized within six weeks. Notably, the centre has begun implementing targeted therapeutic interventions even before an official diagnosis is confirmed. This proactive approach is designed to provide support during the brain’s most critical developmental stages, with a clear goal of lowering the average age of autism identification from the current range of three to four years down to two.

By consolidating neurodevelopmental paediatricians, psychiatrists, and therapists into a single multidisciplinary facility, Sakina aims to eliminate the fragmented, stressful care pathways families have historically navigated. Dr. Nahida Nayaz Ahmed, the centre's chief medical officer, stresses that early intervention is vital, as it allows for specialized programs to be introduced when a child's brain is at its most adaptable. Experts are urging parents and teachers to look for early indicators—such as limited eye contact or speech delays—and seek professional advice immediately rather than assuming a child will simply "grow out of" these challenges. With services covered by the Thiqa insurance programme, the centre is well-positioned to meet the rising demand for developmental support across the region.
