Dubai’s pedestrian bridges get a smart upgrade: RTA to install motion-sensor LED lighting

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(45d ago)UAE

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially kicked off an initiative to modernize the lighting systems on 30 pedestrian bridges throughout the city. By transitioning to smart, motion-activated LED technology, the RTA aims to enhance the safety and comfort of residents as they navigate major roadways at night. This project is a key component of the authority’s "People Happiness" initiative, which prioritizes user experience while simultaneously advancing Dubai’s goal of becoming a global leader in environmental sustainability and energy-efficient infrastructure.

To ensure the new systems are both effective and responsible, the RTA conducted extensive site assessments and light-level studies at every designated bridge before installation began. The motion-sensor technology is specifically designed to reduce energy waste by only illuminating paths when pedestrians are present, effectively lowering operational costs without sacrificing safety. The first stage of this rollout, covering 21 bridges, is already in progress, with the entire project slated for completion by the final quarter of 2026. This move reflects the RTA's ongoing commitment to integrating cutting-edge, eco-friendly solutions into the emirate’s public transit network.
