Abu Dhabi’s Grocery Aisles Get a Healthier Makeover
Abu Dhabi supermarkets are undergoing a significant transformation by clearing high-traffic areas, such as checkout counters and store entrances, of sugary snacks and processed junk food. As part of the Abu Dhabi Healthy Living programme, this initiative aims to curb impulsive shopping habits that often lead to unhealthy dietary choices. Local residents have welcomed the change, noting that removing these "temptation zones" helps them avoid unnecessary snacks and encourages more mindful purchasing. Many shoppers expressed relief that their children are no longer exposed to sweets while waiting in line, and they appreciate that stores are prioritizing wellness over aggressive promotional displays.
Beyond store layouts, the city is also championing transparency through the Nutri-Mark labeling system, which grades packaged goods from A to E based on their nutritional quality. Many residents have started relying on these labels and the TAMM app to make more informed decisions about the products they bring home. This shift is part of a broader government strategy that includes restricting fast-food advertising and upgrading school meal standards. By reshaping the retail environment to favor healthier options, Abu Dhabi is successfully nudging consumers toward better long-term health without completely stripping away their freedom of choice.
