Heartbreak After Dubai Showroom Blast: Expat Mourned Days Before 30th Birthday

Sun, Aug 9, 2026(1h ago)UAE

The recent gas cylinder explosion at an Al Quoz car showroom has left the community in mourning, particularly following the tragic death of 29-year-old Cameroonian mechanic Nkeng Lord Boris Ekangwo. Ekangwo, who had been working at The Car Superstore as a temporary employee, was just days away from celebrating his 30th birthday on August 8. His family and friends describe him as a hardworking, jovial, and selfless individual who was deeply committed to his craft and his loved ones. Plans for his wedding, which was set to take place later this year, have now been replaced by grief as his family works with the Cameroonian consulate to repatriate his remains for burial.

The incident, which occurred on August 3, also claimed the life of a 27-year-old Indian marketing specialist, leaving two families devastated. While Dubai Civil Defence successfully contained the fire within an hour, the showroom has remained closed indefinitely as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the explosion. For those who knew Ekangwo, his passing is a profound loss; he is remembered not only as a skilled mechanic who had lived in the UAE since 2019 but as a resilient and kind-hearted person who prioritized the needs of others. The local Cameroonian community and his surviving siblings continue to receive support as they navigate this difficult time.
