IAEA Warns of Grave Risks Following Attack on UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Plant

Wed, May 20, 2026(93d ago)UAE

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi has issued a stark warning following a drone strike on the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. While the attack resulted in a fire at an external electrical generator, Grossi confirmed that radiation levels remain within safe parameters and no casualties were reported. During his address to the UN Security Council, he emphasized that such military actions against peaceful nuclear infrastructure are entirely unacceptable and represent a severe violation of international humanitarian law.

Grossi praised the UAE for their proactive cooperation and transparent communication with the agency’s Incident and Emergency Centre throughout the crisis. He stressed the importance of adhering to the seven fundamental pillars of nuclear safety, cautioning that any military activity near such sensitive sites carries catastrophic risks. As the IAEA continues to monitor the situation, Grossi announced plans to travel to the Gulf region to further assess emergency response protocols and ensure that regional nuclear facilities remain secure amidst ongoing geopolitical volatility.
