The Rise of "Shadow Workloads": How AI is Reshaping UAE Employment

Mon, Aug 10, 2026(1h ago)UAE

A recent report from Robert Walters highlights a significant shift in the UAE workplace, with nearly 80% of professionals finding their job roles expanding well beyond their original descriptions. This phenomenon, dubbed "shadow workloads," sees employees taking on extra tasks—often facilitated by AI tools—without any formal adjustments to their titles, salaries, or career trajectories. While AI is undeniably boosting productivity and allowing staff to master new skills more quickly, it is also leading to a quiet crisis: almost half of these workers are putting in longer hours, yet only a small fraction have actually sat down with their managers to discuss this increase in responsibility.

This expansion of duties has introduced new pressures, with many employees reporting a "competence hangover"—a state of exhaustion and mental fatigue following intense performance periods. While the UAE remains a tech-forward hub where AI adoption offers a clear competitive edge, business leaders must be careful. If companies continue to use technology simply to increase the pace of work rather than alleviate pressure, they risk burnout and decreased retention. Moving forward, sustainable growth will require firms to better recognize these evolving roles and actively manage workloads to ensure that efficiency does not come at the cost of employee well-being.
