UAE Solar Initiative Transforms Rural Healthcare Access in India

Mon, Aug 10, 2026(1h ago)UAE

A transformative healthcare initiative backed by the UAE has successfully brought vital antenatal screenings directly to over 5,000 women in rural India, sparing them from grueling journeys of up to 60 kilometers. Spearheaded by the Zayed Sustainability Prize’s "Beyond2020" program and implemented by the SELCO Foundation, this project utilizes solar-powered "AnandiMaa" medical kits to provide rapid, community-based diagnostics. By integrating solar energy with advanced tools like AI-assisted stethoscopes and maternal health kits, local clinics have drastically reduced referral times and improved patient outcomes, while also boosting daily outpatient visits and vaccination rates through the reliability of constant power.

Beyond simply installing hardware, the initiative emphasizes a "whole-care-pathway" model that addresses the complex intersection of energy, technology, and medical expertise. According to Dr. Harish Hande, CEO of the SELCO Foundation, the program's success stems from building sustainable infrastructure—including remote monitoring, preventative maintenance, and staff training—rather than relying on technology in isolation. By redirecting budgets previously wasted on unreliable diesel power toward the upkeep of these solar systems, local facilities are creating a long-term, replicable framework. Dr. Hande suggests that this methodology could be scaled to other regions, such as Africa, provided that future projects remain rooted in a deep understanding of local health needs and the creation of resilient, integrated support systems.
