Faster Commutes on Sheikh Zayed Road Following RTA Lane Expansion

Mon, Aug 10, 2026(1h ago)UAE

Commuters heading from Abu Dhabi toward the Dubai World Trade Centre can now enjoy a more seamless drive thanks to a strategic road widening project completed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). By adding a seventh lane along a 2km stretch near the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro station, the RTA has successfully boosted road capacity by 17 percent. This infrastructure upgrade is designed to streamline traffic flow, effectively cutting peak-hour travel times by as much as 10 percent for the thousands of daily motorists navigating this bustling corridor.

This development is part of a larger initiative to modernize Dubai’s primary highway and accommodate the city's rapid expansion. The improved section provides better connectivity to major business and tourism hubs, including the Museum of the Future, DIFC, and Al Karama. Alongside the new lane, the recent opening of a high-capacity bridge at the World Trade Centre Roundabout has already proven effective, slashing travel times in that area from six minutes down to just one. Together, these enhancements reflect Dubai's ongoing commitment to easing congestion and building a robust transport network that keeps pace with its growing population.
