The UAE is set to significantly broaden its National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, known as Hayat. In a major move to advance medical care, the Ministry of Health and Prevention has announced plans to incorporate highly specialized procedures, including uterus and intestine transplants. Furthermore, the initiative will cover vascularized composite tissue transplants, allowing for complex surgeries involving faces, hands, and arms. This expansion represents a major shift toward high-acuity medicine, requiring seamless coordination among multidisciplinary surgical teams to ensure success throughout every stage of the treatment process.

Beyond these intricate procedures, the Hayat program is also scaling up its focus on tissue donation, with plans to include bones, skin, heart valves, and corneas. The ministry is also actively developing protocols for donation after circulatory death (DCD), a vital pathway that allows for organ recovery after the heart and circulation have permanently ceased. By diversifying both the types of tissues available and the methods of donation, the UAE aims to drastically increase the supply of life-saving transplants for patients in need, reinforcing the country's commitment to strengthening its healthcare infrastructure and improving patient outcomes.
