Perseids Meteor Shower Illuminates the Sharjah Desert Night

Fri, Aug 14, 2026(1h ago)UAE

The Mleiha National Park became a hub of excitement late Thursday as hundreds of stargazers gathered to witness the annual Perseids meteor shower. While the frequency of meteors was modest, the quality was truly breathtaking; attendees were treated to vivid fireballs streaking across the sky in brilliant shades of blue, red, and white. These vibrant colors, explained by experts at the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, are the result of vaporized metal atoms like magnesium, nickel, and iron burning up as debris from the Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle enters our atmosphere at incredible speeds.

Beyond the meteors, the event offered an immersive astronomical experience, complete with guided telescope viewing of Saturn’s rings, the star Vega, and the planet Venus. To ensure optimal visibility, participants embraced the darkness, using red-filtered lights and eventually switching off all devices to allow their eyes to adjust to the desert night. Whether it was families enjoying their first celestial hunt or tourists marveling at the crowd of enthusiasts, the evening proved that even the peak of a UAE summer can offer a magical escape. As the night concluded, the spectacle left a lasting impression on everyone present, turning a simple desert gathering into an unforgettable encounter with the cosmos.
