Life-Saving Breakthrough: Toddler Overcomes Rare Immune Disorder Through Father’s Bone Marrow

Fri, Aug 14, 2026(51m ago)UAE

A 13-month-old child struggling with a rare and life-threatening immune disorder has been granted a new lease on life following a successful bone marrow transplant in Abu Dhabi. The toddler had faced a harrowing start to life, suffering from persistent, severe infections and a debilitating skin condition that left him in constant distress, resembling the appearance of severe burns. After medical testing uncovered a mutation in the RAG1 gene—linked to Omenn syndrome—doctors realized the situation was critical, especially given that the family had previously lost another child to a similar condition.

Because no fully matched donor was available, the specialized team at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre and Yas Clinic turned to a haploidentical transplant, utilizing stem cells donated by the child’s father. The procedure was a success; the child’s body accepted the new cells, leading to a significant restoration of his immune system and the healing of his skin. Now recovering well and gaining weight, the young patient’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the necessity of early diagnosis and the life-changing impact of advanced, multidisciplinary medical care in the UAE.
