Man Faces Trial in Sharjah Over Mistaken Identity Assault

Sat, Aug 15, 2026(1h ago)UAE

A Sharjah man is currently standing trial following a bizarre incident in which he allegedly assaulted a stranger while mistaking her for his own wife. The victim, an Arab woman, was walking with her children when the defendant approached her and began shouting unintelligible remarks. Terrified, the woman sought safety in a nearby shop, but the man followed her inside, where he continued his verbal abuse before reportedly grabbing her by the neck in front of her traumatized children. The victim testified that she had never encountered the man before and was completely bewildered by the unprovoked attack.

During the court proceedings, the defendant admitted to the confrontation but offered a strange defense, claiming he misidentified the woman due to her physical resemblance to his wife. He explained that he was embroiled in ongoing marital disputes and, in a moment of confusion, believed he was confronting his spouse. The defendant confirmed he suffers from no medical or mental conditions that would explain the behavior. The Sharjah Misdemeanours Court has since adjourned the case, ordering that the victim and additional witnesses be summoned to provide further testimony before a final verdict is reached.
