Navigating Health: When to Use AI and When to See a Doctor
As artificial intelligence becomes a staple in our daily lives, many people in the UAE are turning to chatbots like ChatGPT to decode symptoms, blood test results, or medication side effects. While the 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer highlights that 59 per cent of UAE residents use AI to manage their health, local medical experts warn that these tools should be treated as a supplement rather than a substitute for professional care. Doctors suggest that AI is excellent for simplifying complex medical jargon, preparing questions for upcoming appointments, or learning about general lifestyle changes for conditions like hypertension or diabetes. However, because AI lacks the ability to physically examine a patient or review a comprehensive medical history, it can never replace a clinical diagnosis.
The real danger arises when patients rely on technology to handle medical emergencies. Experts emphasize that symptoms such as chest pain, sudden vision loss, severe breathing difficulties, or unexplained weakness demand immediate medical attention, not a chatbot consultation. Relying on AI can lead to dangerous delays in treatment, as seen in cases where patients mistake serious infections like pneumonia for minor illnesses. Ultimately, the best approach is to use AI to become a more informed patient, but always consult a qualified doctor when your health is on the line. As one specialist noted, you should use AI to help you ask better questions, not to provide the final answer.
