Dihui Yu, a 17-year-old graduate from Dubai College, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming only the second student from the UAE to win a medal at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). Competing against over 300 students from 78 countries in Vilnius, Lithuania, Yu secured a bronze medal despite facing a significant disadvantage: the lack of practical laboratory training. After learning that the UAE team would receive no hands-on preparation—a critical component that accounts for half of the competition's assessment—Yu pivoted to an intense self-study regimen. He spent up to 10 hours a day mastering complex theoretical concepts through university-level lectures, past papers, and rigorous textbook study, a strategy that saw him rank impressively high in the theoretical portion of the event.

His success was a testament to both his academic dedication and his ability to adapt under pressure. While he struggled with certain practical tasks—such as insect dissection, which he famously tried to prepare for by dissecting a fish at home—his background in medical internships and independent research helped him navigate specific laboratory challenges. Beyond his scientific accolades, Yu is an avid reader of science fiction and a committed Eagle Scout who has applied his chemistry knowledge to create water filtration systems for workers. As he prepares to pursue a career in neuroscience, he hopes his achievement will serve as a catalyst for better infrastructure and support for future UAE students competing in global scientific olympiads, ensuring they have the resources they need to showcase their talent on the world stage.
