Hidden Sun Hazards: Why Your Daily UAE Commute Is Aging Your Skin

Mon, Aug 17, 2026(1h ago)UAE

Many UAE residents assume that staying indoors or avoiding long periods outside keeps their skin safe from sun damage. However, dermatologists warn that everyday activities—like driving to work, walking to a parked car, or sitting near an office window—can lead to significant cumulative skin issues. While standard glass blocks most UVB rays, it often fails to filter out UVA rays, which penetrate deeply into the skin. Over time, this daily, low-level exposure can result in visible pigmentation, accelerated aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer, as seen in cases where patients develop asymmetrical sun damage on the side of their face most exposed to window sunlight.

To mitigate these risks, experts emphasize that sunscreen is non-negotiable, regardless of whether you spend your day inside or outdoors. Simply wearing makeup with added SPF is rarely enough; instead, dermatologists recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 applied in a generous, consistent layer—not just a few dots. It is also a common misconception that protection is only needed on sunny days, as clouds allow about 80% of UV radiation to pass through. By maintaining a consistent habit of applying sun protection and being mindful of prolonged sun exposure through glass, residents can better protect their long-term skin health against the subtle but persistent desert sun.
