Indonesians Celebrate 81st Independence Day in the UAE
The Indonesian community across the UAE gathered at the embassy in Abu Dhabi this week to commemorate their nation’s 81st Independence Day. Dressed in a vibrant display of traditional textiles—including batik, ikat, and songket—attendees showcased the true meaning of the national motto, "Unity in Diversity." A highlight of the morning was the formal flag-hoisting ceremony performed by a dedicated group of youth known as Paskibra. Ambassador Judha Nugraha emphasized that involving the younger generation in these customs is vital, as it helps expatriate youth remain connected to their cultural identity and the core Indonesian value of gotong royong, or communal cooperation, while living abroad.
Following the formal proceedings, the atmosphere shifted to a festive community celebration featuring traditional culinary rituals, such as the cutting of the cone-shaped yellow rice dish known as tumpeng. Children and families enjoyed nostalgic games, including cracker-eating contests and fashion shows that celebrated the country’s diverse regional attire. This year’s festivities held extra significance, as they coincided with the milestone 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the UAE. By blending solemn national traditions with joyful cultural activities, the event successfully bridged the thousands of miles between the UAE and Indonesia, allowing the diaspora to honor their heritage while fostering strong ties within their host country.
