UAE Takes Legal Action Against Resident Over Offensive Social Media Posts

Fri, Aug 21, 2026(45d ago)UAE

The UAE’s National Media Authority has initiated legal proceedings against a resident following a series of posts on social media that disparaged Emirati women. In addition to the legal investigation, the authority has suspended the individual’s advertising permit for three months. Officials emphasized that this decision reflects a strict zero-tolerance policy toward any content that diminishes the dignity of Emirati women or fails to align with the country's established media standards, which mandate respect for national identity and societal values.

The Dubai Women Establishment also stepped in to clarify that the individual had no affiliation with their organization, refuting false claims circulating online that linked the offensive content to their projects. This incident serves as a stern reminder of the UAE’s strict regulatory landscape, where the "Mu’lin" permit requires influencers to adhere to cultural decorum. Under the nation's cybercrime laws, those found guilty of using digital platforms to insult others face severe repercussions, including potential imprisonment and heavy fines of up to Dh500,000, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining respectful public discourse.
