UAE and US Launch Joint Military AI Task Force
The United Arab Emirates and the United States have officially inaugurated a bilateral military artificial intelligence task force based in Abu Dhabi. Known as Task Force Talon Synapse, the unit integrates roughly 20 Emirati and American experts in cybersecurity, data science, and AI. While the formal announcement marks a new milestone, the initiative is the culmination of years of collaborative experimentation. This partnership aims to leverage advanced technology to bolster intelligence gathering, secure critical infrastructure, and enhance regional security monitoring through a permanent, institutionalized framework.
This new task force builds upon the foundation laid by previous maritime initiatives, such as the US Navyâs Task Force 59, which first experimented with unmanned surface vessels and AI-driven data analysis in 2021. The UAE joined these efforts in early 2023, conducting exercises that trained AI platforms to classify and identify maritime activity. By shifting from periodic drills to a standing joint unit, Talon Synapse represents a significant escalation in defense cooperation. This transition is further supported by recent high-level agreements, including a Major Defense Partnership and relaxed US export controls on advanced computing, which now allow these two nations to work side-by-side to develop and deploy next-generation military technology.
